P09.46 - Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Comorbid with Tuberculosis is Associated with Better Prognosis (ID 3607)
00:00 - 00:00 | Presenting Author(s): Ho-Sheng Lee
- Abstract
Introduction
Patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) increased risks for tuberculosis (TB) infection or reactivation. However, the prognosis of NSCLC patients comorbid with active TB is not clear.
Methods
We retrieved information and identified patients with malignancy and TB from the Taiwan National Health Insurance reimbursement datasets. We analyzed and compared the survival of NSCLC patients with and without active TB.
Results
During 1997-2014, we reviewed 101,380 patients with lung cancer and among them, we enrolled 613 patients with TB under rifampicin-containing regimen and 2724 matched patients without TB by age and sex. after exclusion and among them, 19,906 had newly diagnosed TB. The TB group was more in early stage of NSCLC whereas the non-TB group more in late stage (p<0.0001). By Cox proportional hazard regression, TB group was associated with lower mortality (adjusted Hazard ratio: 0.67, 95% C.I.: 0.60-0.76 by age, sex, cancer stage, and comorbidity), even after adjusting by lung cancer stage.
Conclusion
NSCLC patients comorbid with active TB is associated with better survival. Further study is warranted to confirm this finding.
