      Introduction

There is evidence that programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression is correlated with histological malignancy. As FDG-PET imaging is often used in cancer detection, we investigate the relationship between PD-L1 expression and FDG-PET in non-small cell lung cancer.

      Methods

Both FDG-PET and immunostaining for PD-L1 expression were performed in 43 surgical cases of non-small cell lung cancer at Sendai Medical Center in 2019. We analyzed these 43 cases for the FDG-PET standard uptake value (SUV), PD-L1 expression, and other pathological findings.

      Results

The median value of SUVmax was 5.5 (range: 0-16.8) and PD-L1 expression was 5% (0-100%). Regression analysis revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.39 (P=0.01) between the SUVmax and PD-L1 expression. In addition, the pathological vascular invasion and lymphatic invasion were associated with PD-L1 expression.

      Conclusion

Our study suggested a relationship between PD-L1 expression and FDG-PET imaging in non-small cell lung cancer. Other factors may also be associated with PD-L1 expression and need further investigation.
