      Background

Pain control in perioperative is important because sufficient postoperative pain control make patients to be early raised and left hospital. In almost patients, PCA is used and played the large role for pain control and is especially effective for operation expected to cause large invasion and strong pain such as in lung cancer. In our hospital, pharmacists are stationed in operative department and also prepare PCA throughout the day. If PCA is occasionally ordered, it could be prepared by pharmacists in his/her stationed time. We investigated the postoperative PCA preparation and also evaluated the contribution of pharmacists to pain control for lung cancer treatment.

We selected the data between October 2014 and September 2017. Number of general and local operations, preparations of PCA (fentanyl contained) and epidural anesthesia (morphine and local anesthesia contained) were counted, respectively. Then the ratio of number of prepared PCA by pharmacists to that all prepared one and number of surgical procedure of respiratory surgery were investigated.

Number of operation was maintained about 5,700 through the year. Number of operated under general anesthesia and respiratory surgery were 3,300 and 200, respectively. All PCA preparation number was as mean of 993, and that for respiratory surgery operation was 170 similarly. PCA was prepared for 76.6% of respiratory surgery patients to control postoperative pain. Almost of our patients ware those of lung cancer, PCA prepared by pharmacists was found to be usually used. It was also revealed that number of PCA preparation was gradually increasing from 2015. Epidural anesthesia were prepared for 20 patients through the study period.

Until now, in the operation part, the anesthesiologist and the chest surgery doctor had been prepared PCA. It is thought that the safe pain control is promoted by the stationed pharmacist while such business of a doctor was reduced. From the above findings, PCA was frequently prepared for almost the respiratory surgery, stationed pharmacists have contributed to reduce patients’ pain and doctors’ medical care and thus worked in closer cooperation as a team stuff in lung cancer treatment.
